Tom Smith, founder of Seismic Micro-Technology (SMT), has announced the launch of his new company, Geophysical Insights. The company tackles fundamental geophysical problems and develops advanced technology for interpretation of seismic data.
The advanced analytic methods being developed by the company are expected to reduce the time and risk associated with oil and gas exploration. Leveraging their new technology, Geophysical Insights will provide consulting services and training to their clients in its application.
The company’s initial research and development focuses on the use of neural networks as a means of rapidly revealing insights to seismic data in ways that may otherwise be missed with conventional methods.
“A major step-change in interpretation technology is required to analyze the vast quantity of seismic data that is now available,” says Smith. “We are on the forefront of advancing the industry’s analytic capabilities, initially through the practical application of neural networks.”
Seismic service companies, exploration and production companies and investors in oil and gas properties are all potential clients of Geophysical Insights.
Prior to launching Geophysical Insights, Smith led the growth of SMT to an international seismic and geologic interpretation software business. In 2007 he led recapitalization of the company to a group of investors, while maintaining a minority investment and position on the board of directors of SMT.
